The country may be locked down – but it won’t be forever. And, even while it is, the smallest back garden can become an endless exploration ground for children as they learn about the ‘Minibeasts’ wherever they may be.
In a stunning and highly-educational new book by Nicky Gould, any family can fuse learning with fun through an enchanting rhyming story that will have them raring to get outside.
Synopsis of ‘Dave Explores the Outdoors... Minibeasts’:
The first in this beautiful series of books from Tots Outdoors, aimed to encourage children (and their grown-ups) to spend time outside. Follow Dave as he explores the outdoors - learning about minibeasts as he goes. Did you know that worms have been around for hundreds of years? Just one of the facts you'll discover whilst reading this beautifully illustrated book. According to the Child Mind Institute, spending time outdoors is very valuable for children. It has many benefits, including reducing stress and fatigue, building confidence and promotes imagination.
This series will help children grow up with a sense of wonder and respect as they reap all these benefits waiting for them outside their four walls. You and your children will gain the world when you motivate them to be Tots Outdoors.
“With what’s happening right now, there’s still tons of opportunities to get outside (even if it’s only in the front and back garden!) to explore the world and learn about the habitats that exist right in front of our eyes,” explains the author. “And, when things return to normal, this book will provide day after day of fun as families take their exploration to new locations – and learn tons along the way!”
.
Continuing, “The Rainbow Trust conducts vital work that improves the wellbeing of families with poorly children, even during their darkest days. Therefore, I’ve decided that, for as long as isolation continues and they struggle with their normal fundraising activities, I’ll be donating all revenue from paperback books, to them so they can continue their invaluable work. I encourage everyone to buy a copy to both support Rainbow Trust, and break the isolation boredom as your garden becomes a wild playground…literally.”
Reviews for the book have been extremely positive. Nisha writes, “A wonderful and educational book, beautifully illustrated. Great for young children exploring and learning about wildlife. Love how each page has rhyming clues, and allows for the child to guess the minibeast. Taught me a thing or two.”
Stephen adds, “Bought this book for my daughter's 4th birthday and she loves it! She loves guessing what the next minibeast is going to be on the following page. As well as being a fun book to read it is also very informative but in a way that's interesting to children. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with children who love to learn about the outdoors!”

About the author, in her own words:
I was born and raised in Dagenham, Essex, and loved my childhood living at the end of a banjo, or cul-de-sac to anyone not from Essex.
I stayed on after school and did my A-Levels - none of which were subjects to do with writing. I should have studied design at university but was too shy to do the presentations.
I've had a varied employment life that has included working in a bank, for Reader’s Digest and as a payroll manager. Over the years I have realised that life is short and you shouldn't have regrets, so I attained a diploma in Design and Innovation at the Open University. This was under the understanding that I would eventually get a degree. Unfortunately, the course costs increased so massively that it was no longer a possibility.
I became a mother which I did not find an easy task in the beginning. Kids are hard work and I'm not ashamed to say it! Don't get me wrong - my daughter is my greatest achievement in life and the path she has led me on shows that everything happens for a reason.
I now own my own company, Tots Outdoors which started as an idea for a toddler class to encourage outdoor play for youngsters, no matter what the weather and whilst still embracing technology. I wanted to base each class around a theme from a book... Which leads us full circle as to why I'm here - completing an Author Bio.
I've now put the toddler class on hold whilst I concentrate on my book series, Dave Explores the Outdoors... the first is about Minibeasts. Told in rhyme, it is the perfect book to help young children to learn and develop.

This and the rest of the books in the series will hopefully be a support to parents who want to get outside with their children but are unsure how to occupy them without spending a fortune, or anything at all.
I've always loved being outside and remember spending most of my childhood summers in a tent in the garden.
As far as the future is concerned, I hope to finish my series, one day franchise my toddler class so that it can reach a wide audience and support the working parents who just want more for their family. Who knows… maybe eventually there will be a Dave Explores the Outdoors experience at Chessington World of Adventures. A girl can dream, right?
