Book Nook: Paramedic Chris

Real-world paramedic chaplain Tim Parsons has written his ‘Paramedic Chris’ children’s book series, which tells fun and engaging stories centred around the workings of the ambulance service. The series recently released audiobook versions of the stories.

Books in the series:

Paramedic Chris – in this first book children learn the importance of not making prank calls to Emergency Services.

Paramedic Chris – A Helping Hand – they receive a call from an elderly patient, but everything is not as it seems.

Paramedic Chris – A Sorry Bully – the children learn a valuable lesson in bullying when the ambulance visits the school.

“Initial sales of the book were much better than anyone expected,” explains the author, who recently contributed an article about his work to ‘War Cry’ magazine. “Wanting to make the series as accessible as possible, I decided to expand it by recording audiobook versions. It’s so great to see the adventures come to life in this way and, in the process, share vital information with readers about how the ambulance service works.”

Continuing, “Having attended so many calls over the years and seeing just about everything there is to see, I have also learned how important it is for youngsters to understand the work the ambulance service carries out every day, and the need to respect and support it. But of course, it’s all wrapped up in tons of fun!”

I had a chance to interview the author to learn more.

Why did you write these books?

I started to write the series after first shift with the ambulance service, I was third manning with a paramedic named Chris and he shared his own story of how his daughter has battled with cancer from a young age and has written a book herself based upon her health experiences. This got me thinking, there is nothing for the ambulance service and I could write a book educating children upon the work of a paramedic. I shared the idea with Chris and we both agreed that this would work , potentially turning into a series such as the fireman Sam series.

Why are emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire trucks so exciting for many kids?
Children tend to pay attention to the sirens and love looking at the various bits of equipment. This has been demonstrated in the latest book, 'A sorry bully'.

Why is it important for kids to read stories about emergency responders?

It is highly important children know what the ambulance service do and stand for, especially at these times with the covid19 process. I have witnessed a number of situations where my colleagues have come under pressure from members of the public and if we can educate from an early age, this will teach how to show respect.

The entire ‘Paramedic Chris’ audiobook series, and the original hardcover and paperback versions, can be ordered from the official website: http://timparsons.co.uk/store/

Hardcover and paperback versions are also available from Amazon and Waterstones.

About the author, in his own words:

Paramedic Chris books were inspired by real-life events with the Ambulance service crew where I serve as a chaplain.

Special thanks to my dad, David Parsons. Dad passed away August 2019 and I’m forever thankful and blessed for his everlasting support and encouragement, not only for me and my family, but also for our Paramedic Chris books.
