When I got the offer to review the book No Reading Allowed: The WORST Read-Aloud Book Ever, I loved the idea so much that I actually checked out author Raj Haldar's first book, P is for Pterodactyl: the WORST Alphabet Book Ever, and loved it as well. Apparently that first book started as a joke, but it became popular with word nerds and parents.
Haldar is also known as Lushlife, an American rapper and record producer from Philadelphia. This book, written with co-author Chris Carpenter, looks at homophones and homonyms. The sentences are creative and funny - like the difference between hare and hair, mustard and mustered, mummy (the parent) and mummy (the creature). The illustrations are engaging and really bring the humor to life. It does a good job of illustrating the importance of clear context and spelling, as well as the idiosyncrasy of the English language. It's a great way to introduce kids to new vocabulary and help motivate them towards more clear writing.
