Parenting Pointers: 3 Ways to Help Kids Develop a Growth Mindset

As a parent, do you fear how gaps in school, extracurriculars and sports might affect the development of your child? Due to the coronavirus, children are spending more time at home and online so helping them learn as many of life’s teachable moments as possible is more important than ever.

Preparing kids to be high achievers who lead happy, fulfilled lives is much easier said than done. Showing them how to persevere in the face of adversity is one of the best ways to help your children thrive.

A few ways to nurture a growth mindset is to teach skills like identifying emotions, working through challenges and practicing positive self-talk. No one likes their kids to feel discouraged, but being challenged and experiencing failure are important to allow them to grow.

For the perfect stay-at-home activity, the folks at Tommy John created three science-backed exercises such as an emotional grid, a goal setting worksheet and a conversational cube. These activities are to be done together so that you can guide them through and help them monitor and reflect on their emotions.

Below we outlined three printable activities to support your child’s growth.

Emotion Grid Exercise

Sit down with your kids and try an exercise where they can reflect on different times they felt various negative and positive emotions. Writing out scenarios of when they felt loved, happy, sad and other emotions will help them identify them and find appropriate ways to moderate them.

Goal Setting Worksheet

Just like you’d make new year resolutions or personal goals encouraging your child to set time sensitive goals will help them feel empowered and understand the satisfaction of working towards and completing their goals. Use the goal setting worksheet to teach them how to set SMART goals.

Growth Mindset Conversation Cube

If not taught how to critically think about their feelings, kids can learn to put themselves down or wrestle with feelings they don’t understand. Encourage them to communicate their feelings when problems arise and practice positive self-talk.
