I recently had a chance to interview the founder of Hypnobabies, Kerry Tuschhoff? She is a nationally renowned speaker and writer on a wide range of women's pregnancy and childbirth concerns.
Her company, Hypnobabies, is on a mission to make childbirth less traumatic and allow moms to have a less painful, more joyful experience by learning techniques through the platform’s natural childbirth education course. Hypnobabies is well-known for helping people create much shorter, easier, and more comfortable labors, making childbirth the joyful experience it was meant to be.
Hypnobabies is one of the safest, most natural ways to bring a baby into the world. Hypnobabies offers live classes, home study courses, and hypno doulas. Hypnobabies is a six-week, three-hours-per-week, complete, natural childbirth education course that was adapted with permission from Master Hypnotherapist Gerald Kein’s “Painless Childbirth Program” techniques (medical grade, somnambulistic hypnosis), rather than using simple relaxation, breathing, or guided imagery. This allows Hypnobabies students to enjoy “eyes-open childbirth hypnosis”, easily remaining deeply in hypnosis while walking, talking, and changing positions; being as mobile as they would like to be during childbirth. Hypnobabies is well-known for helping people create much shorter, easier, and more comfortable labors, making childbirth the joyful experience it was meant to be. It also allows moms to be more in control of their birthing experience and thus, bond more easily with their babies upon delivery. Hypnobabies uses the same medical hypnosis techniques that people employ when preparing for surgery without any drugs, which is called hypno-anesthesia.
How can hypnosis positively affect childbirth?
The benefits of hypnosis for childbirth are many:
- Most hypno-students who use somnambulistic, medical-grade hypnosis also use fewer drugs or no drugs during childbirth, which means less risk of side effects for them or their babies. This is due to elimination of the Fear/Tension/Pain Syndrome, and using post-hypnotic suggestions.
- Most people have shorter labors since there is less resistance of the birthing muscles when pain and fear are minimized or eliminated.
- They generally have much more energy throughout first and second stage, due to them being profoundly relaxed throughout the birthing process.
- The birthing environment is much more calm and peaceful when the birthing person, using hypnosis, is comfortable, relaxed and confident.
- Breech and posterior babies can sometimes be turned using hypnosis.
- Blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature can many times be lowered, and nausea, back and hip pain eliminated with hypnosis during pregnancy and birth.
- There are fewer interventions for failure to progress and therefore fewer complications during labor for our mothers and babies.
- The deep relaxation enjoyed during hypnosis sessions has also helped many a nervous birth partner to enjoy their partner’s pregnancy and childbirth.
- The relaxation and hypnosis skills that hypno-students learn will benefit them for the rest of their lives.
- As hypnosis is practiced, hypno-students are easily “deprogrammed” from the usual negativity of birth stories and scenarios they may have heard or read. Hypnosis training, which has positive messages and hypnotic suggestions, helps greatly to eliminate such fears during pregnancy and childbirth.
Why might it benefit people even if they're skeptical about hypnosis?
Some start out skeptical, however, since hypnosis is a means of moving into a perfectly natural state of mind that all people actually experience several times in a day, it actually feels very “normal”. Have you ever had the experience of driving along the highway and suddenly realizing that you passed your exit several miles back? You were in hypnosis!
Or been so caught up in a book or movie or video game that you don’t even realize that someone has been speaking to you for the past several minutes? THAT is hypnosis. So, when a hypnotist or a hypnosis audio track guides you into hypnosis, they are not asking you to experience anything strange or that you haven’t experienced before.
Daydreaming, falling asleep and waking up, “zoning out” – these are all states of hypnosis and everyone experiences these differently. In guided hypnosis sessions, we all experience hypnosis differently as well. Some people feel very light and “floaty”, some people feel very heavy, and some people are even hyper-aware of everything around them when they listen! Some people don’t “feel” or “experience” anything at all that is out of the ordinary for them while they are in hypnosis. You simply cannot gage your state of hypnosis by a feeling, or an experience.
Hypnosis is also used therapeutically for fears, phobias, self-esteem issues, weight loss and many other issues as well as in surgeries (hypno-anesthesia) where the patient has a serious allergy to anesthetics.
How can people work with their healthcare providers if they want to pursue medical hypnosis for childbirth?
Along with discussing their other birthing choices, we encourage our hypno-students to notify their medical care providers that they will be using somnambulistic hypnosis techniques for their birthing. This allows communication about natural childbirth and other important decisions between them well before childbirth. Most of the time, doctors, nurses and midwives are fascinated with the process of medical-grade self-hypnosis for childbirth and help the birthing hypno-family to create the atmosphere they need for easier birthing. Soft lighting, minimum disturbances, and watchful waiting are so helpful for allowing the hypno-birther to use her excellent hypnosis tools during birthing!
