Movie Minute: Church People

I had the chance to see a screener of Church People, a film that takes a funny, yet thought-provoking look at the lengths some churches will go to try to attract people - sometimes in very misguided ways.

In the story, Guy is trying to get back to the heart of ministry and put showiness behind him. As he realizes he's become more fame-based than Gospel-driven, he cuts a speaking tour short and makes the return to regular youth ministry. But then he finds himself trying to discourage his youth group from performing an outlandish stunt. Meanwhile, there are parenting and relationship things happening - which just goes to show the challenges of managing ministry and family.

Honestly, although it's a little bit of hyperbole, I've seen a lot of the same types of behaviors in evangelists who seem to be more focused on what Christianity can get them in material possessions and status than on what it has to offer spiritually - too many have lost sight of the servant heart that was commanded. This movie provides an opportunity to encourage viewers to think about how far is too far, and what the real root of the ministry should be.

I have a chance to give away a screener of the film. If you're interested, leave a comment with what you hope to see in a church leader, or what you think you'll like about the film. Deadline is March 15th.
