Caring Causes: Zakat Foundation of America and #MonthofGood

Zakat Foundation of America is being featured as a top charity in Facebook’s brand-new #MonthofGood campaign to celebrate — and give back during — Ramadan.

It’s one of five nonprofits Facebook selected to help Muslims fulfill their Zakat obligations, which are typically done in Ramadan (though it is not mandatory to do so in the holy month). The Muslim holy month of Ramadan is a month of fasting that calls Muslims to reflect on their blessings and express gratitude through spiritual discipline and philanthropic acts.

This is the second Ramadan during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Facebook and Instagram users contributed twice as much to Ramadan-related fundraisers last year than they did in 2019. The charitable giving grew as people began to need it that much more.

“Last year, our community exchanged more than 20 million ‘Happy Ramadan’ posts and comments on Facebook, and WhatsApp video calls spiked on the first day of Eid,” Facebook wrote in a newsroom post. “Despite the barriers to coming together in person, Ramadan remains a time for generosity, charity and reflection.”

“With over 1 million nonprofits in 19 countries that can receive donations directly through Facebook, we are honored to be highlighted as one of five organizations to give to in Ramadan,” said Amna Mirza, Chief Marketing Officer at Zakat Foundation of America. “We are a connected universe. The urge to help one another is natural, and Facebook makes it easy to give. Facebook makes it possible for more people to help.”

Zakat Foundation of America’s donors are able to give a warm meal to hungry people in about 50 countries for just $5, or a food package that will feed a family of five for the month for just $60. One way to contribute is by going directly to the organization’s website at zakat.org/donate. Donors can also work with friends to raise money through Zakat Foundation of America’s facebook fundraiser.
