The George Floyd Global Memorial will host a one-year anniversary celebration on Tuesday, May 25 in Minneapolis. The celebration will be held at George Floyd Square - the intersection of 38th and Chicago in Minneapolis where George Perry Floyd Jr. died - which has since become an international memorial. The commemoration will bring together the family and friends of Floyd alongside the members of the community.
“George Floyd Square and the George Floyd Global Memorial were built by members of the community who wanted to preserve the site where my nephew lost his life,” said Angela Harrelson, George Floyd’s aunt who lives in Minneapolis. “On the anniversary of his death, we will celebrate the impact of his life on our family, friends, the community and our society.”
The day-long event will begin at 1 p.m. local and include community art and children’s activities, along with an open mic session and concerts featuring Grammy Award-winning Sounds of Blackness and notable DJ Sophia Eris at 6 p.m., ending with a candlelit vigil honoring Floyd at 8 p.m.
“Everywhere you look, people have created something that reflects the current moment, the actual spot where George was murdered,” said mural artists Peyton Scott Russell. “There's flowers with notes and trinkets and things that just reflect people's offerings. Everyone in Minneapolis processed George Floyd's death differently.”
These offerings are tended to by local community members, known as “caretakers,” with support from local organizations including the Pillsbury House and Theatre and the Midwest Art Conservation Center.
The George Floyd Global Memorial was established by Floyd's aunt Angela Harrelson, her cousin Paris Stevens, and Lead Caretaker Jeanelle Austin, to bring together members of George Floyd's family and the local community to preserve more than 2,500 creative expressions of pain and that mark the place where George Floyd took his last breaths. Since last year, George Floyd Square serves as an ongoing occupation protest and memorial site, visited by people from all over the world to stand in solidarity for racial justice and pay respect to the names of people who have unjustly died at the hands of police.
The George Floyd Global Memorial plans to continue to the living memorial that inspires all people to pursue justice. The non-profit will be accepting donations during the event and online.
