Music Minute: Flor Bromley - Pachamama

A tribute to her roots that fuses indigenous musical elements with popular styles, Pachamama, the third album for families from native Peruvian Flor Bromley, is released today by 8 Pound Gorilla Records, just in time for Pachamama Raymi, the August celebration of Mother Earth in Latin America, and National Hispanic Heritage Month in the U.S. in September.

Pachamama” means Mother Earth in Quechua, the language of Flor Bromley’s ancestors, which listeners will hear throughout the album, along with Spanish and English. Painting a musical picture not only of the miraculous diversity of nature, but also how diverse human beings are, Pachamama encourages taking care of the Earth and embracing our differences to strive for a better world.

Produced with attention to and respect for cultural authenticity, Pachamama offers a sampling of music from around the world: Andean huayno, bachata from the Dominican Republic, tanguillo from Cadiz, Tex-Mex quebradita, tango, country/folk, a Peruvian hip-hop fusion, and even more.

Pachamama showcases the unquestionable talents of a stellar array of artists, including Flor Bromley, whose vision, energy, and enthusiasm are matched by her evocative vocal abilities and songwriting talent. The album also features contributions from such children’s music luminaries as “the queen of kids’ music” Laurie BerknerJustin Lansing (of the GRAMMY-winning duo The Okee Dokee Brothers), Peruvian folk-pop star Wendy Sulca, hip-hop artist SaulPaul, and beloved Peruvian children’s performer Miss Laurita, supported by an instrumental team that includes the uber-talented violinist Elena Moon Park.

ABOUT FLOR BROMLEY
Bilingual powerhouse children’s entertainer Flor Bromley is originally from Trujillo, Peru. A professionally trained musical theater actress with an Education degree, Flor moved to New York City in 2007, receiving a scholarship to study Musical Theatre at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. But Flor’s optimism about diversity and inclusion in the U.S. came face to face with a different reality when she learned there were few to no roles for Latino women in theater. “I was a woman, and a woman of color, and I had an accent,” Flor says. “I couldn't access the white roles, but I couldn’t access the black roles, either. I look Latino. Sometimes they wanted me to make my accent thicker – more Sofia Vergara – or they wanted me to dance like Chita Rivera. I wasn’t going to get any of those roles while staying true to myself.” While the American system put Flor in a box, it also allowed her to find her niche and define herself as what she truly is: a Latino woman and bilingual children’s entertainer. Her mission is to share the Latino-American experience through her music with a new generation.

Flor Bromley’s previous albums include Chiqui Music Boom (2015) and Fiesta Global (2020). Fiesta Global was named a Notable Children’s Recording of 2020 by the ALSC, a division of the American Library Association.
