Henderson, Nevada-based author Jewel Daisy announces the publication of her new children’s fiction book, “Blue Hissy Highness and the Shiny Stones.” The lyrical story about forgiveness, mindfulness, mutual understanding and social and emotional awareness tells the tale of a distinctive chuckwalla—a lizard native to Southern Nevada’s Mojave Desert. Other native animals featured include the desert big horn sheep and great blue heron, and the rugged yet beautiful Black Canyon, Nevada, landscape, provides the story’s setting. Kimberley King illustrated the book, which targets children ages 4 to 12.
Blue Hissy Highness makes moody clouds in the sky, and the other ‘wallas who said she would have to blend in will soon learn why. When a second blue ‘walla arrives wearing stones and a smile, a storm erupts—but that doesn’t cloud the shiny-stone style. In fact, the crystal stones themselves reveal their power to inspire change.
“Nature shows us its mystical cycles that make the natural world around us so magical,” explains Jewel Daisy. “The connection between the two lead characters mirrors that magic. This story contains so many subtle spiritual messages, and it’s my hope that readers feel them all.”
Chuckwallas, like the story’s title character, are real-life lizards native to the Mojave Desert who love basking on the warm sunny rocks of the Black Canyon area of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and landscape near Hoover Dam. Part of the iguana family of lizards, chuckwallas are large with wide bodies. When frightened, they scurry between rocks, take a large gulp of air, and inflate themselves so they’re wedged into a crevice to stay safe.
