Book Nook: MouMou and Friends

Written in celebration of people’s spirit and beauty, beyond the disabilities that all too often are perceived to set them apart, Sara Momtaz has created this captivating and inclusive children’s series in response to her daughter Amani’s Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome) diagnosis.

Using the joy for life that exudes from her own daughter as inspiration for her first protagonist, MouMou, this follow on series tells the story of an exceptional little girl, who along with her best friends, Enzo the cat and Harvey the Bichon Frise puppy, embark on several separate fun-filled adventures that showcase their super powers.

With this first three episodes launching the author’s literary plan to publish a series (featuring six episodes) every two to three years, the author’s intention is to introduce a new protagonist with a disability, special or additional need in each story. This adept strategy not only raises awareness in its young readers that we are all uniquely distinct but provides an opportunity for children and parents to learn more and do their own research.

Aimed at three to eleven-year olds, and with an unequivocal message that ‘we all belong’ running throughout, this series is a much welcomed addition to children’s literature and should be embraced by all librarians responsible for which books are to be found on the shelves in junior school libraries.

The Amazing Adventures of MouMou & Friends – Episode 2 – More Than A Race

It's a big day at MouMou's school, the annual Sports Day is finally here! MouMou and Harvey are all set to go and can't wait for the games to begin! But it seems like someone is not showing good sportsmanship and being way too competitive to allow everyone to join in with the activities.

It’s supposed to be a fun day for all, but alas a careless error leads to devastating results, as well as valuable lessons being learnt.

Who will win the race? Well that all depends on exactly which race you’re referring to?

The Amazing Adventures of MouMou & Friends – Episode 3 – Flying High (to be published early 2023)

The gang are excited about going on holiday.  After a hectic rush to get ready, they finally make it to the airport to be greeted by what most people would refer to as mischief and misbehaviour.

With the help of some kind passengers, MouMou, Enzo and Harvey spring into action to shine light on the situation and eventually save the day by using their superpowers.

Things are not always what they seem. Sometimes we must think outside the box and see the bigger picture!

The author says:

“MouMou, Enzo and Harvey are all based on actual personalities. Their characters have been created to “normalise” children with special and/or additional needs through the eyes of other children. As we all grow up into young adults, seeing people in wheelchairs, looking “different” or taking longer to do what we can, should be simply viewed as unremarkable. Instead of staring, wondering, and often unsure how to engage with someone who is perceived as “different”, MouMou, Enzo and Harvey encourage you all to just say hello and make new friends!

“The first book in the series is “The Great Hunt”, followed by the second book “More Than a Race”, with the third episode in the series “Flying High”.  Each of the stories follow on from each other, with gripping plots and hilarious antics throughout!”

About the author:

Sara is the mother of Amani (MouMou) whose life completely changed upon receiving Amani’s Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) diagnosis. Eventually overcoming the desperately dark days of trying to understand what Down syndrome is, to grappling through extremely testing times of dealing with Amani’s open heart surgery, the surgeries that followed and all the therapy interventions Amani will need, Sara grew increasingly more confident that she can overcome the challenges that lay ahead.

Sara was overwhelmed with the fear of the unknown, and what the quality of life will look like for Amani as she gets older. That’s when she decided to leave her successful corporate career to spend time to just enjoy Amani and all the miraculous joy she brings to everyday life. For it is indeed true when people say, it is not what you want, but what you need that will bring you true happiness and a sense of purpose and existence.

Amani for Sara is exactly that, and through MouMou and Friends, Sara hopes to bring that joy to others, and to celebrate the beauty of people in whatever form, in a world where “We All Belong”.
