Positive Words For Kids And Teenagers - Positive Self Talk For Kids

Teaching kids how to speak positively is an important part of a child’s social and emotional development. How we talk and think about ourselves, others, and the world around us can significantly impact our mental health and well-being. As such, learning how to speak more positively, in general, is an essential life skill that can help boost confidence, increase resilience against negative thoughts, and empower children to achieve their personal best.

The ability to see the world through a positive lens isn’t something that comes naturally to everyone. In fact, numerous studies have shown that adults are increasingly viewing negative things as “normal.” This can be especially true for young people who spend so much time online and watching television.

Learning to see the good in the world and one another is imperative for healthy personal growth. Teaching kids how to speak positively will go a long way toward helping them maintain a positive outlook on life. Try incorporating these positive words in your daily speech to help your child view the world from a more optimistic angle.

The Positive Words Strategy

The "positive words strategy" is an approach to speaking with kids that involves using positive words more often than negative words. This technique involves asking your child to sit with you and tell them to name all the positive words that start with C. The next day, you will do the same thing, but you will want them to list positive words that start with the letter D. You repeat this every day until you reach the last letter, Z.

It is proven that if you repeat this at least once a month, your child's vocabulary will change, and he will start using more positive words.

Why guide children to positive self-talk

The one thing that self-talk does is it gives you the ability to create an internal pathway to success. When you say something to yourself, your brain automatically picks up on that message and files it away, creating a connection between the words you are saying and the goal that you are trying to achieve. When you can connect something with your self-talk, your brain knows exactly what to do when it comes to actually achieve that goal, which can help you feel more confident in your abilities.

Self-talk can also help you stay motivated throughout the process of trying to achieve your goal. When your self-talk reminds you what you are working towards and how close you are getting to achieving it, it can give you the push you need to keep going when things get difficult. Self-talk can also help reduce stress levels by giving you an outlet for releasing any negative feelings or thoughts that may be weighing on your mind.

And this is exactly what we want for our children; to aim for a successful life and think as positively as possible because our words and thoughts have incredible power!

To-Do List For You And Your Child

  • Repeat positive words at least once a day
  • When a child uses a negative word, don't get angry with them. On the contrary, remind them to use positive words next time.
  • It is your child and you who should use more positive words. Be a role model for your child.
