Going Green: Dandylion Dog Care

Carolyn Chen has a bone to pick with the grooming options on the market. Her 10-year-old cockapoo, Mocha, has suffered from skin irritations, and diet changes and vet visits didn't help provide her any relief from her constant itching and scratching.

With four years of experience launching clean beauty brands, Carolyn has always been well-informed about what she puts on her own skin, so she started to wonder what she was using on Mocha’s coat. She discovered that the dog care industry is highly unregulated with no product testing standards, lack of ingredient transparency, and misleading ingredient lists. She analyzed over 30 dog shampoos and conditioners and found that the majority contained irritants like drying alcohol, harsh sulfates and most commonly, fragrances and essential oils.

She set out to create a transparent brand that puts our dogs' skin first - formulated with good-for-your-skin ingredients and without potentially sensitizing ones so our fur babies can enjoy more play time and soak up their days without the scratching.

I had a chance to interview her to learn more.

Why did you create Dandylion?
Mocha, my 12-year-old cockapoo, has always had itchy skin, but during the pandemic, I saw just how much she was itching all day at home. Throughout the years, we've brought her to vet visits and switched up her diet to pinpoint the source of her itchiness but it can take months - years to figure out and it can often be more than one thing contributing to itchy skin. I wanted a way to soothe her itchy skin while we were going through the diet changes and after speaking with a vet dermatologist, I learned that frequently bathing your dog can help remove contact irritants that may be contributing to the itchiness and soothe the skin; however, when I looked for suitable products to use on her, I found that most products on the market are riddled with harsh and irritating ingredients, such as sulfates, drying alcohols, and most commonly artificial fragrances and essential oils. All these ingredients would make her itchiness worse. I wanted a product that was gentle, put her skin first and could help manage her itchy skin and that's how the idea for Dandylion was born.

Why is it important for pet owners to have products that are healthy for their pets and kind to the planet?
As a dog parent, I'm always looking for ways my dog can have a longer, healthier & happier life. Using products that are healthier & intentionally formulated products for your dog can help prevent health issues, manage existing concerns and promote their overall health & well-being. It's important to consider the environmental impact we and our pets have and products that are eco-friendly and sustainable can help reduce the carbon footprint of pet ownership.

Overall, choosing products that are healthy for pets and kind to the planet is an important step towards promoting the health and well-being of pets, reducing the environmental impact of pet ownership, and creating a better future for all.

What sets Dandylion apart from other dog care brands ?

At Dandylion, we disclose all our ingredient lists using the International Nomenclature for Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI). This standardized terminology provides dog parents with easily accessible information on our ingredients.

We also co-build our products together with our community & bring in experts, such as vet dermatologists, groomers, and chemists, to make sure we are bringing the latest innovation, education and thinking into our products.

Prior to launching, Dandylion built a passionate community of over 100 dog parents to crowdsource ideas on how to make better products for their dogs, and test and provide feedback on formulations.
