I recently had a chance to do this interview with CarbonShack Design
What is biophilic design?
Biophilic design addresses our inherent desire to connect with the natural world. In contemporary societies, we generally spend the majority of our time indoors, in the built environment. Yet as a species, we evolved in direct and intimate connection with nature. The intention of biophilic design is to provide opportunities for holistic reconnection with the natural, biological world, as a way to promote wellbeing and health, and to enhance a sense of community among and between people.
Our work at CarbonShack seeks to accomplish this is a few ways: By designing and building homes that respect and adapt to the natural world and its resources. By designing and fabricating home furnishing products hand-crafted from locally-sourced and produced reclaimed, sustainable, recycled and earth-friendly materials. By imbuing our designs and products with motifs inspired by the natural world, that visually connect us to the wonders of nature.
Why is high-quality lighting worth the investment?
High-quality lighting can contribute directly to the ambience of your home interiors, as well as to your well-being. To the untrained eye, it may seem that the differences between lower-end and higher-quality light fixtures is negligible. But the truth is that a well-made, thoughtfully designed fixture actually does several things a cheaper model does not. With recessed ceiling lights in particular, the detailing and finish options available with high-end fixtures are simply superior. With high-quality fixtures, you can do trimless (where there is no visible frame at the ceiling aperture - you just plaster right up to the opening); if you go with the trimmed versions, you can choose from a variety of trim shapes and finishes to suit your interior; and you can select various refelctors, lenses and filters to adjust the quality of the light. Higher-end fixtures also often position the light source inside the apparatus so that it provides maximum illumination with minimal glare. When the light source sits close to the fixture lense, it means the bright, intense glow of the light element is more within your sightline, which can mean that you get a direct eyeful of glare. In addition, many lower-end fixtures do not provide options for varying or adjusting the color of the light. In more public areas like the living room and bedrooms, you might prefer a warmer light, say 2700 Kelvins, whereas in a kitchen or bathroom, you may prefer something cooler, say 3000K. Lower-end fixtures might not offer all these options in the same fixture, but high-qaulity fixtures generally do. This allows you to have a consistent aesthetic and quality of light throughout the home.
How can people find the right pieces to fit their home?
The short answer is: with a lot of searching! There are endless numbers of options available these days, and internet searching provides an incredible tool for accessing them. However, that does not guarantee that you will find what you are looking for - or what will work best in your home. A really good design starts with a properly scaled layout of all rooms being designed, and the proposed furniture items to be included (not necessarily the exact specific pieces, but generally the type and size of piece you’d like to have, and where you envision it going). This layout can then guide you towards the items you are looking for, as well as the sizes of pieces that will fit in your spaces. From there, it’s really a matter of taste and vision - and hunting! If engaging a qualified interior designer is within your budget, then that can really take a lot of the guesswork and footwork out of the equation for you. Being able to rely on an interior designer’s experience, knowledge of the materials and practices of design, and access to resources can be a HUGE help in finding just the perfect pieces for your remodel project.
