September is baby safety month and we'd like to share the TICKS of babywearing. TICKS is an acronym for the basic safety measures while babywearing. Regardless of the style of carrier being used, the TICKS safety rules apply. Parents and caregivers need to familiarize themselves with this checklist of safety measures. It will help them feel more confident, keep baby safe, and make them feel like a pro when it comes to babywearing!
T - Tight Carrier: Ensure your baby feels like an extension of you, weightless and snug. If you need to support your baby with your hand or feel discomfort, it's time to adjust the carrier for a seamless fit.
I - In View Always: A quick glance should give you an unobstructed view of your baby’s face, with no fabric barriers. Monitor your little one's cues and make sure they are breathing with ease.
C - Close Enough for a Kiss: Aim to have your baby at a height where a gentle nod lets you kiss their forehead. Remember, younger babies should be worn higher.
K - Keep Chin Off Chest: Safety first! Ensure a two-finger gap between your baby's chin and chest to keep their airway clear, especially if they fall asleep.
S - Support the Back: Honor the natural C-curve of your newborn's back. Your carrier should embrace this shape, offering comfort without undue pressure.
Remember, TICKS is universal across all carrier types. Familiarizing yourself with these points ensures babywearing becomes an effortless, bonding experience.
