Money Matters - Inflation Survey from WalletHub

With gas prices 58% higher than the historical average and inflation still putting pressure on people’s budgets, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its editors’ picks for 2024’s Best Gas Credit Cards to help drivers save money, along with a new survey to gauge consumer sentiment.

Key Findings:
  • Gas Rewards to the Rescue: 61% of people think gas rewards credit cards are a good way to save money on fuel purchases.

  • Fuel Price Frustration: 73% of Americans feel that gas prices are too high.

  • Where Price Hikes Hurt Us the Most: 22% of people say that high gas prices are worse than food inflation.

  • Rewards Cushion the Impact of Pricey Gas: 70% of people say that rewards make them feel better when gas prices are high.

  • Gas-Specific Credit Cards: 32% of Americans have a credit card just for gas, but only 14% of baby boomers share this practice.

  • Best Gas Rewards Credit Card: The U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card offers 4 points per $1 spent at gas stations, as well as at EV charging stations and on travel. New cardholders can also earn an initial bonus of 50,000 points for spending $2,000 in the first 120 days.

  • Best Gas Station Credit Card: The Speedway Credit Card is the best gas station credit card, offering 50 points / $1 spent at Speedway, as well as an initial bonus of 25,000 points after spending $500 in the first 3 billing cycles.

“They say ‘whoever smelt it dealt it,’ and I’m smelling the opportunity for people to save a lot of money on gas this summer as they hit the road en route to vacation destinations, so I’ll dole out some tips. For starters, if you’re part of the 73% of Americans who feel that gas prices are too high right now, according to a new WalletHub survey, you can fight back by getting a credit card that rewards you with up to 5% back on fuel purchases. WalletHub’s survey found that 61% of people think gas rewards are a good way to save money, while 70% of people say that rewards make them feel better when gas prices are high. If you frequent one gas station chain, a card affiliated with that station is likely to be your best bet. If you fill up at different stations, get a card with generic gas rewards.”
