Want to safeguard your stuff while traveling this summer? Follow these expert tips.
With pickpocketing accounting for 48.1% of crimes in tourist hotspot Barcelona, it’s clear that your valuables are under threat from sticky-fingered thieves while you’re on vacation. But how do you keep your stuff safe while traveling?
Blake Asaad from GOODSTONE has heard hundreds of accounts of robbery from his clients, and now he’s using his experience to compile a list of top holiday hacks to keep your valuables safe.
Leave Fancy Jewelry At Home
“When traveling, it's wise to avoid wearing expensive jewelry such as engagement rings, diamond necklaces, or valuable watches,” Blake says. “These items will attract unwanted attention from thieves.”
If you want to accessorize, opt for inexpensive replicas of your most important pieces, or wear some costume jewelry that won't be a significant loss if it gets stolen.
Hide Your Valuables In Unusual Items
To safeguard your cash, cards, devices, and other valuables, think creatively about where to stash them. For example, you could hide your money in everyday objects like an empty sunscreen or water bottle, tape your cash and cards to the underside of a drawer in your hotel room, or even use a hollowed-out book to stash your phone.
“You could also invest in travel accessories like a belt with hidden compartments or clothing with secret pockets to discreetly store your valuables,” Blake advises.
Utilize Locks, Cables, And Straps
Many travel bags come with lockable zippers; use them to prevent easy access. When dining or resting, such as eating out on the street or sleeping on a bus, secure your bag to a fixed object or yourself. You can use the bag’s straps, or you could bring some cable ties with you to DIY it.
Avoid leaving laptops, cameras, or phones in plain view, even in your hotel room. Use the hotel safe, or if you don’t have one, get a lock for your luggage to keep valuables secure inside your bags.
Divide And Conceal Cash
To mitigate the risk of losing all your money at once, divide your cash into smaller amounts and distribute them among various pockets, including your money belt, wallet, and different bags.
“I’d also recommend carrying only small amounts of local currency with you for daily expenses. Keep larger sums back at the hotel, ideally in the room’s safe,” Blake advises.
Use Bluetooth Trackers
You can use devices like AirTags or Tile trackers to help you locate misplaced items or track them if they get stolen. These devices can be attached discreetly to your bags, cameras, or other valuables. You can then install the corresponding app to monitor the location of your items in real time.
“You should also be backing up your data in case of theft and using a money belt to keep all your valuables secure,” Blake says. “Stay vigilant and close to your bags at all times on public transport, and don’t ever set your phone down on a restaurant table - I’ve seen these get snatched right before someone’s eyes. If you follow these tips, you’ll be able to enjoy your vacation in peace.”
