Travel Tidbits - Changing Definition of Luxury Travel

A new report uncovers the changing definition of luxury travel, with 65% of Americans saying any type of travel is a luxury for them in 2024.

The survey found that 37% of Americans are traveling less this year, and most (88%) blame cost:

  • Of those traveling less, 44% aren’t traveling at all in 2024 due to cost
  • 1 in 3 are postponing a trip at least 6 months due to cost
  • 1 in 3 prioritize travel experiences over financial stability
  • 17% are taking a vacation even though they can’t afford it
  • 15% are incurring an average debt of $2300 in order to travel

When asked about top splurges, Americans chose “nonstop flights” and “a hotel room,” as their 2024 vacation splurge, and 20% say common travel amenities like carry-on luggage and a hotel room are now luxuries.

Take a look at the full report for popular luxury travel amenities in 2024, as well as where Americans spend the most money when traveling.
