While pajamas may seem like a simple item, for families facing economic hardship, access to fresh, comfortable sleepwear is often a luxury that falls behind essentials. St. Kevin Catholic Academy, located in Flushing, Queens, is launching a Pajama Drive, which will continue through November 29, collecting new pajamas for boys and girls from newborn to age 14.
“Donating new pajamas provides more than just clothing—it gives families a sense of security and care,” says Eliana Montalvo, event coordinator for the St. Kevin Catholic Academy Parent Association. “New pajamas can help children feel safe and warm, fostering a good night's sleep, which is essential for mental, emotional, and physical well-being. For children, having their own clean, cozy pajamas can boost their sense of belonging and self-worth, which positively impacts their overall development.”
This initiative is part of the 15th Annual Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive held in conjunction with Scholastic and the non-profit Pajama Program. This event isn’t just about having fun, according to Montalvo, but is a chance for students to build empathy and community.
New pajamas for all season in age ranges 0-12, all sizes from newborn to children’s XL will be accepted during school hours at the St. Kevin Catholic Academy, which is located at 5-50 195th St. All pajamas must be a complete set – top and bottom or onesie, but no sleep gowns. There will be a large box in the lobby of the main entrance for drop-off.
“By participating, students will gain a sense of pride and ownership in giving back, which is vital to their emotional and social growth,” Montalvo adds. “This fundraiser is a great example of how our school fosters meaningful connections and develops a sense of responsibility in young learners.”
The Pajama Program is a 501 (c))(3) nonprofit organization that promotes equitable access to healthy sleep so children can thrive. For every pair of pajamas donated, Scholastic will donate a brand-new book to Pajama Program to go to a child facing adversity.
