Enriching Education - Musicolor and Summer Enrichiment

As the summer heat continues, so does the annual concern among parents and educators…how to combat the “summer slide” while still giving children the freedom to play. A growing number of families are discovering a powerful, screen-free solution—music education reimagined for the way
young minds actually learn.

The Musicolor Method, developed by educator and musician Andrew Ingkavet, transforms music instruction into a colorful, hands-on experience where children as young as three can begin playing songs without needing to read sheet music. Using a unique system of color, shape, and pattern, Musicolor empowers children of all learning styles—including neurodivergent students—to thrive creatively while building cognitive skills that last well beyond the summer months.

In this interview, I had a chance to learn more about how this multisensory method is turning summer into a season of brain growth, not backsliding. With programs across the U.S. and internationally, Musicolor is proving that playful, inclusive music instruction can support executive function, memory, emotional regulation, and more.

Why are traditional music education methods not always effective for younger children, and what sets the Musicolor Method apart?
Traditional music lessons often expect kids to think like mini-adults: reading complex notation, sitting still, and following abstract theory before they even touch an instrument. That just doesn't match how young children naturally learn. With the Musicolor Method, we flip the script and meet kids where they are, through color, story, rhythm, and movement. It’s joyful, intuitive, and builds confidence from the very first note.

How does learning music encourage cognitive development and academic readiness?
Music is a full-brain workout. When kids play music, they’re strengthening pattern recognition, memory, listening skills, focus, and emotional regulation, all while having fun. It’s like hiding vegetables in the spaghetti sauce. They don’t even realize how much they’re learning!

How is Musicolor especially appropriate for neurodivergent students?
Every child deserves the chance to shine, and neurodivergent kids often need just a different door into the learning process. Musicolor is built on what I coined as *Instinctual Learning*, using visual cues, step-by-step structure, and playful repetition. We remove the overwhelm and build success in tiny, joyful wins. Our method is flexible, accessible, and has helped so many kids feel seen, heard, and capable.

All in all, we grow kids through music!
