Book Nook - Holy Disruption

Many churches grapple with profound questions: "Who are we if the institutions we so closely associated with God do not exist anymore?" Holy Disruption: A Manifesto for the Future of Faith Communities by pastors Amy Butler and Dawn Darwin Weaks tackles widespread fear and grief, challenging leaders and lay people to see current upheaval not as an end, but a divine opportunity for rebirth. The authors, experienced clergywomen, refuse comfortable denial or quick fixes, instead providing a compelling vision for how Christian communities can reimagine their purpose, courageously stepping into uncharted territory.

Through vivid stories of "holy disruptors"—pastors, entrepreneurs, and everyday leaders— this book showcases new life emerging in unexpected places. These pioneers are not clinging to the past, but living the gospel in fresh, faithful ways by radicalizing resources, blessing neighbors, growing communities, and disrupting unjust systems. The result is spiritual re-imagination leading to healing, hope, and sustainable ministry, making faith communities "credible signs of God’s reign in justice and mercy." The book emphasizes that "resurrection always begins in the dark" and God's work continues as institutions fade, inviting readers to join this transformative movement.

Walter Brueggemann noted that in this "brave, bold book," Butler and Weaks "challenge the church to step up to its authentic vocation of interrupter of ‘business as usual.’"
