I recently had a chance to review Heather Ogden’s debut novel, The Betrayal, book 1 of The Lies We Fear series.
The book is a young adult dystopian novel, blending elements of magic with elements of rebellion, upheaval, and tight-fisted authority. The protagonist, Angelette Arabella, unravels the truth about the revered leader of Libertis (her father) who may not be the hero she believes.
The plot is fast-paced, which can keep reluctant readers involved. There are twists and surprises along the way as well. There isn't a great deal of character development, but it's appropriate for a compact, suspense-filled novel. There are also characters who aren't exactly what they seem. It was an intriguing book and plotline that kept me reading - I finished the book in a single sitting. My only complaint is the cliffhanger ending, and how long I'm sure I'll have to wait for the sequel!
