Mealtime Magic: Health Warrior Chia Bar

According to estimates by the U.S Census Bureau, the average American consumes almost 26 pounds of candy each year. Excess candy consumption can contribute to weight gain, the epidemic of early onset diabetes, mood swings, tooth decay… the list goes on.

Health Warrior Chia Bars make a great replacement to high-sugar, empty-calorie-filled, non-nutrient providing candy. They come in three delicious flavors: Peanut Butter Chocolate, Coconut, and Acai Berry. They have only 100 calories and 5g of sugar per serving. Besides just being healthier alternatives, Chia has extra health benefits: six times more calcium than whole milk, six times more protein than soy, 15 times more magnesium than broccoli does, twice the fiber then bran flakes, and nearly nine times the amount of omega-3s than found in salmon.

So they're healthy, but do they taste good? That depends on what you're expecting. If you're expecting a super sugary chocolate bar, then you'll be disappointed. But if you are looking for a tasty, healthy snack, then they'll be perfect. They aren't really sweet, but they are more satisfying than candy because they are more filling, and there's not really the empty sugary feeling. I didn't like the coconut as much, just because I don't like coconut, but my husband did. I really liked the acai berry. The berry flavor was just the perfect touch. The texture is good - chewy, but not too chewy.

I don't know that I'll be handing these out as Halloween treats, but I will be buying them for us at home. The Chia Bars are available at Whole Foods, or you can buy them online at the site.

Disclosure: I received complimentary samples to facilitate this review.
