Mom, I'm Not a Kid Anymore: Navigating 25 Inevitable Conversations That Arrive Before You Know It was not what I expected. But I think I liked it better because of it.
First of all, the subtitle is perfect. My daughter is not even six yet, and has already asked tough questions like, "Why can Jill and Megan have opposite signs in their yard but still both be our friends - and which one is right?" (in reference to vote yes/vote no signs) and, "Why would someone hurt kids?" (which she asked after the Newton shootings, despite our best efforts to keep her from hearing about). So it's definitely important to be prepared for tough talks before you think you'll have to be.
What I expected was a book that contained tips and talking points on a variety of tough issues. But that's not it. The author doesn't pretend to be an expert. Instead, she shares how the conversations have come up in her household, and why she answered the way she did. I actually liked that better. Instead of assuming a one-size-fits-all approach, it's written with a works-for-me tone. It's definitely helped give me some ideas for ways to talk about things as they come up, as well as reinforced my feeling that keeping things open and honest now will set a good foundation for later.
