Gavin Lawrey has mitochondrial disease, a disease that is still largely understood. His big sister Makenzie has an ambitious goal - to raise $1 million to help find a cure. She currently has a start at $40,000 raised from donations and her self-published book (using Amazon's CreateSpace) Mighty Mito Superhero. The book is about her brother and his experience with mitochondrial disease. While it won't match everyone's experience, it helps put a face to this disease that affects the cell's power centers.
The book is sad, touching, and warm at the same time. I liked the opportunity to teach my daughter about one of many "invisible" diseases, even if the book was hard to read and imagine the struggles the family has. You can learn more about the family and their story at Hope 4 Mito.
