Healthy Habits: Acne

Disclosure: I received complimentary products to facilitate this post. All opinions are my own.

As kids are going back to school soon, many teens will be facing acne woes. Hormonal differences in teens can lead to increased acne, which can affect self-esteem, particularly in severe cases. My husband had major acne as a teen, and still has mild acne on a regular basis today, so he's pretty well versed in how to control it. Here are the things he's picked up over the years:

  • Don't pick at severe acne. You can create worse scars and irritate skin tissue, creating more acne issues.
  • Wash with a mild soap.
  • Consider salicylic acid, tea tree oil, or benzoyl peroxide treatments for spot treating.
  • Wash your face after sweating to avoid irritation.
  • There are other treatment options, including medications, surgery, and dermatological treatments, that you can consider if the case is severe and nothing seems to help.
  • Avoid heavy makeup. It covers acne up but can also clog pores and irritate skin.
  • Some people have found that certain foods aggravate acne. Foods that may be triggers include gluten, sugar, salt, dairy, peanuts, salt, processed carbohydrates, and fatty foods. Consider reducing or eliminating one particular trigger and see if it helps (this actually worked for my sister-in-law, who finds noticeably clearer skin when she minimizes her gluten intake).
You can also consider specially-formulated anti-acne products. AcneFree is clinically proven to both treat and prevent acne, featuring different modes of application, ingredients and systems that provide a complete regimen of cleansing, moisturizing, and treatment products, with products containing dermatologist-recommended effective acne treatment ingredients such as salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. My husband found the deep cleansing duo to be really good for his skin, cleaning without irritating. He wasn't a huge fan of using the brush itself (since it added an extra step to his morning), although he noticed a difference in skin quality when he did!
