Enriching Education: Story Monsters Ink Holiday Edition

Kristi Yamaguchi skated her way into our hearts with her stellar performances in the 1992 Winter Olympics. Yamaguchi says initially, she was a far cry from the skating champion she would eventually become. But she says she’s grateful she had to exert so much effort every time she laced up her skates because it forced her to develop a strong work ethic. Today, she’s winning our children’s hearts as well and inspiring them to dream big through her children’s books and literacy foundation.

Karolyn Grimes was just six years old when she played George Bailey’s daughter “Zuzu” in one of the most beloved holiday films of all time. Now 70 years later, she and illustrator Karen Deming have released a children’s book, Zuzu’s Petals: A Dream of It’s a Wonderful Life, which builds on the movie’s lasting message of hope.

Also in this issue, we meet R.W. Alley, the illustrator of the beloved Paddington Bear series; a comedian called Piff the Magic Dragon who will leave you scratching your head; Tynea Lewis, LitPick’s site administrator who has been recognized for her contributions to children’s literature; and JoAnn Wagner, who had no idea that the throwaway trinket would ultimately lead her to a successful second career as a children’s book author.
