I remember seeing Jack Hanna do a number of appearances with animals with David Letterman. I always enjoyed how comfortable he was around animals that seemed scary, and how well he could quickly share interesting info about the animals in such a short time. My daughter loves animals, so I was eager for the chance to review Jack Hanna's Awesome Animal Almanac.
This book covered a wide variety of animals, small and large, insects, mammals, reptiles - it's a very comprehensive guide. There are beautiful, bright photos of the animals, and a lot of facts and tidbits. Some of it I already knew, but there were even bits of information that were brand new to me! The animals included are listed alphabetically, so it's easy to find your favorite. If you're just browsing through the book, it does mean that related animals may not appear next to each other, but that doesn't really affect enjoyment of the book. There are so many animals that even if kids are bouncing around to their favorites, they're bound to learn about other animals they see as they flip through the book.
The information is well-written for kids. It's not condescending or oversimplified, but it is written in language that's easy for kids to understand. Overall, I think this is a great book for animal lovers, or even just to have a quick reference guide with information about some of the most amazing animals on our planet.
