Consumer Critique: BugBand

I live in Minnesota, where the mosquitos can be pretty bad, especially while camping. Although summer is winding down, there is still plenty of time left outdoors, and you might be tired of using standard insect repellents that might contain ingredients you don't want to use; or of alternatives that don't quite work.

I recently had a chance to try some products from BugBand. They have a line of naturally derived, DEET-free repellents that come in many different forms, so you can find what works for you: wristbands, spray, towelettes, bead bags, and diffusers. The main effective ingredient is geraniol, essential oil from geraniums, and it works against the major pests - mosquitos, flies, gnats, fleas, no-see-ums, and ticks. The US-based company uses a formula that is non-toxic and even safe for pregnant women.

What I liked about the wristbands is that they work for up to five days - so you can put one on at the beginning of summer camp or a camping trip and it will provide protection the whole time. One kind even glows in the dark - extra fun and visibility for young children!

BugBand products can be purchased at Bass Pro Shops, Walmart, Target, REI, Whole Foods, Eddie Bauer, The Home Depot, and other stores near you.
