Consumer Critique: YULU Games

According to NPD research, games and puzzles are up 18 percent, the largest category in toys last year. Games are great for families - they provide screen-free entertainment and a chance to bond.

I recently had a chance to review Break Free and Safe Breaker, part of the new Spy Code game line from YULU Toys. The games mix action, strategy, skill and luck, appropriate for a wide variety of ages, with different levels and different ways to play.

In Break Free, players are handcuffed together and must pick the locks in their handcuffs. There are three difficulty levels of mazes, plus several variations for one to four players. The locks were big enough to fit even my husband's wrists, but for the variation where ankles are locked, they only worked for my daughters.

Safe Breaker was a very different game. There's a simple code that needs to be broken, and the game involves attention and memory. Like Break Free, there are several variations to take the difficulty level a bit higher. This game was not as much of a challenge as other games we've played, but it's a really good option for families who want a game that younger kids can play too.

You can find the games at Target.
