Healthy Habits: Flu Prevention

Sick days are coming in hot – cold and flu season is here, estimated to hit hard and cost billions.
The CDC believes between 9.2 and 35.6 million people will get the flu this year causing Americans to lose about 111 million workdays at an estimated $7 billion. Many families can’t afford to get sick, and when they do they need to feel better quickly.
Natural solutions like the Neti Pot can lead to worse symptoms and infections, even deaths have occurred caused by brain-eating amoebas from contaminated water! And harsh suction devices can cause significant harm to both adults and children. Aside from cold medicine that leaves you in a fog, what’s the best answer?
To help, I’ve included prevention tips from ER nurse, Helen Anderson, MSN, and information about CLEARinse, a physician-recommended all-natural suction device safe and appropriate for the whole family. Unlike the Neti Pot or Nose Frida for babies, it uses pure saline and a gentile suction pump system to remove congestion.
Please consider include including this information in coverage about the 2018/2019 cold & flu season. Please reach out if you would like more details, an interview or images.
Flu Prevention Tips:
1. Get your flu shot. The CDC estimates that 90% of kids who died from the flu are unvaccinated. The flu shot is a vaccine that protects against 3 or 4 different strains of flu, by introducing tiny amounts of the virus into your body. Not enough to make you sick; but just enough to make your body produce antibodies to combat the virus.
2. Wash your hands frequently. Hand washing is the best way to keep the germs you pick up on door knobs and handrails from making you sick.
3. Get enough sleep and stay hydrated. Rest helps our immune system stay strong and ready to fight off illness. Drinking enough water keeps the membranes inside your nose moist and able to carry away any foreign material you breathe in before it can make you sick.
4. Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth. Even if your hands look clean, you may have touched a surface and picked up the flu virus. The skin on our hands provides a strong barrier but our eyes, nose and mouth have little in the way of defenses and provide easy entry into our body.
Recommended by doctors, CLEARinse creates a similar flow and pressure settings used in doctors offices and hospitals to clear stuffy noses and sinuses. Safe for the whole family!
