Book Nook: Wisdom & Wordplay

Author Robert Eddison is a national journalist and playwright from the UK, and was just called a “modern day Oscar Wilde” by The London Times. He is known for recording and sharing witty thoughts and one-liners, which he's been doing for twenty years. I recently had a chance to read his new book, Wisdom & Wordplay: 300 Original One Liners to EnrichYour Day
(Filament Publishing, Oct. 2017).
"Wisdom & Wordplay offers the ideal gift for all who love words and for whom English is either their first or second language,” says Eddison. “It’s is rich source of ideas, as much for the best man at a wedding as for the conference delegate, stuck for a light-hearted way to open a speech. Plus, it is just fun.”
This book is awesome for those who like puns - but appropriate even for the pun-averse, since the book isn't based just on puns. There are a lot of sophisticated word play examples, as well as other brief, witty thoughts. Anyone who likes dry humor, or sophisticated humor, or puns - or just wants to remember a few lines to throw into conversation - will appreciate this book. Topics range from parenting to politics, and everything in between. Some are profound, others just funny, but all of them are enjoyable to read.

After winning a European scholarship and graduating in Modern Languages and Law at Cambridge, Robert Eddison became a university lecturer, before embarking on a lecture tour of America in his mid-twenties. After a spell as a junior Foreign Office consultant, he settled for a freelance career in journalism, writing colour features for the broadsheets and tabloids. His magisterial 1,700-word interview with the late Margaret Thatcher for the London Times, while still training on local papers, not only opened all doors to Fleet Street, but also oiled the hinges. Robert swims, writes and breathes in central London and, when not writing, can be found deep in conversation with friends over a good dinner.
