In The Treebobs and the Dizzy Broomsticks, the enchanted forest comes alive with new, loud, awful sounds as the wicked witches cut through the branches of trees to turn them into broomsticks. The good citizens of the forest come up with a clever idea to stop them.
I had a chance to interview the author to learn more.
What was the inspiration behind the book?
I have always wanted to write children's books and always been intrigued with the concept that we could be sharing our world with elves, and pixies along with the nature we can see. I love the idea that such creatures could live in complete harmony with nature. With this in mind I was sat in a car park during the fall and watching sycamore seeds fly down from a sycamore tree. It was quite a beautiful sight in the wind and while I was watching this the idea of little magical creatures that could live on the tree came to mind and I went on from there.
Why is it important for kids to read about teamwork?
I think this is so important, because all children like to feel included in a group activity. Its great to feel a sense of satisfaction of contributing to a joint project but also to see how an individual contribution has gone to make up the whole.
How can books encourage kids to learn about problem solving?
How can books encourage kids to learn about problem solving?
They can greatly encourage children because if a child is engaged with their favorite character and see how the character approaches a problem then hopefully they will feel inspired and encouraged. One of the strong characters in the book is Bindweed Belle and her practical approach, clever plans, kindness and leadership skills hopefully demonstrate all of those qualities that a child can empathize with in resolving challenges in their own life.
This is a cute book that emphasizes the ideas of teamwork, following through with a plan, and using each person's abilities to make the world a better place.
