I recently had a chance to review Our Best Life Together by Joel & Victoria Osteen (FaithWords; March 6th). In this book, bestselling authors use Biblical principles to help couples live in a loving and fulfilling marriage.
I am a strong advocate for reading together, and doing devotions together, as a family and as a couple. Logistically it can be a challenge, and it can be hard to find something that appeals to both parts of a couple. This book is a devotional that takes just a few minutes a day and includes a prayer to pray together. When couples have a shared spiritual goal, it can promote unity, reflection, and communication in the marriage.
This isn't exactly the book I would have chosen myself. My husband and I look for things that are a lot deeper, and we've been together long enough, in a fairly stable situation, that we need something more in-depth. However, this devotional is great for several different groups of people - those relatively new to relationships that haven't yet reached many of the things mentioned in the book or are encountering them for the first time, for couples relatively new to the faith who aren't used to looking at things from a spiritual perspective, or for those who are just getting into the habit of devotional time together and need something short and easily accessible to jump-start that pattern. The length, breadth of topics included, and Biblical applications make it a solid devotional book for couples in many different stages.
Right now you can get a taste of the devotional by signing up for the FaithWords eNewsletter. It's a great way to see samples of the devotions in the book and decide if it's right for you.
