I recently had a chance to review the new YA novel Sophie. This book is a well-written, intriguing story, but also one that parents and children can read simultaneously so that parents can help children navigate some of the sticky political issues in today's world, such as honesty, immigration, independence, and integrity.
When Leo meets Sophie, she's so engrossed in her book she doesn't notice him. The two become close, with Leo admiring her determination. But Sophie has a secret - she and her mother are illegal Syrian immigrants, but she is determined to change that. They start a business to raise money to hire a lawyer, but then Sophie is drawn into a politicians scheme when her secret gets out.
Author Tal Tsfany is passionate about independent thinking, personal happiness, and politics because he grew up in a Kibbutz – a small communist settlement in Israel where everything is shared with the community and nothing can be claimed as your own. He knew in his heart from an early age that these ideals didn’t seem right. He eventually left and as an adult moved to the United States for work. It was right then that he absolutely fell in love with America, its history, what it stands for and the genuine happiness that comes from having freedom – something he never experienced as a child. It was these concepts he wove into Sophie.
