More Americans are willing to go to jail than the entire population of Uruguay to escape debt. It holds an immense power over our heads. As of 2018, total U.S. consumer debt stands at $3.87 trillion according to the Federal Reserve. Now, Americans would forfeit the rights that have defined the very fabric of this country for hundreds of years.
MyBankTracker conducted a survey to see what Americans were willing to give up to get out of debt. Here are the surprising results:
- Read only fake news - 13.1 million
- Forced to switch political parties - 10.5 million
- Right to data privacy (i.e.web browser history) -10.3 million
- Religious freedom - 9.3 million
- Freedom of speech - 6 million
- Men were twice as likely than women to give up freedom of speech (4M vs <2m font="">2m>
- Your freedom - go to jail - 3.5 million
- Men were nearly four times as likely to go to jail than women (2.7M vs. 775,000)
- Gen Xers (35- to 54-years-old) were more likely to read only “fake news” or switch political parties than millennials (18- to 34-years-old)
Methodology: MyBankTracker conducted a Google survey the week of August 12, 2018. It surveyed 2,000 U.S. adults, ages 18+.
