From the authors of the breakout inspirational book Beautifully Said comes Grit & Grace
Grit & Grace is a collection of quotes, stories and sage advice from female trailblazers, creatively designed to inspire modern-day leaders. It's a beautiful collection from a diverse set of voices, each with their own perspective, but each sharing a piece that will resonate with many women.
I had a chance to do an interview to learn more.
Why did you decide to write this book?
Most often, when you see a quote from a leader, that leader is a man. When we started crunching the numbers a few years back, we realized the stats were even starker than we thought. We found that less than 15% of the quotes shared every day are by women & girls. Ultimately, that means men’s ideas are getting a lot more airtime and so they unconsciously become more associated with leadership. Since then, the Quotabelle team has been on a mission to help solve that imbalance by finding creative ways to share the ideas and stories of women & girls. Grit & Grace is our latest project related to that mission. It showcases the thought-provoking words of 90 female trailblazers, including on topics where women’s voices seem especially underrepresented—like leadership, courage and innovation. As a new mother, this project has gotten even more personal to me. I’d love to help equip my daughter with tools that will enable her to see a world of possibilities and take part in shaping a better future.
Why is this book so helpful for young women?
We designed Grit & Grace to be a kind of personal inspiration gallery for leaders of all stripes and ages, but we dedicated it especially to emerging voices. With lots of insightful quotes paired with brief, interesting bios, the book is a great way to introduce female role models to girls and young women. We included some impressive A-listers who will appeal to younger readers, like Jennifer Lawrence, Taylor Swift and Meghan Markle, but we also packed it with less visible women (like a cruise ship captain, a roboticist and a police chief) whose uncommon stories might just spark new passions or career paths. We hope, too, that engaging with the diverse ideas and biographies in Grit & Grace will help young people to begin developing their own unique leadership styles.
How can people draw on these stories for their own lives?
Well, for me, Grit & Grace is a great companion book that I can rely on when I’m looking for a bit of wisdom or a compelling story to help me think through a problem, communicate an idea to others in my writing or teaching or just get out of a rut. You can dip in and dip out of it, flip it open to any page for a daily dose of inspiration, and return to it again and again. We’ve also been delighted to hear the many ways that other people are making use of the book—from coaches using it to guide team talks, to parents reading it together with their daughters and sons, to patients taking it along as a source of strength and comfort during treatments, to execs working the content into speeches and team-building sessions. The stories are great for inspiring yourself, and they’re great to share with others to help spread inspiration.
