Editor's Note: The first sentence seems odd to those of us in the USA, but remember that Australian seasons are different.
The hottest season of the year is just a little bit away and, for sure, Aussie children will be restless waiting for school to let out in time for the holidays. However, those with a cubby house can look forward to a fun summer because this piece of play equipment offers numerous ideas for fun.
If you are a parent who wants to keep the little ones busy this summer, here are five fun activities that you can arrange for your kids using their cubby house.
1. Create a set up for a tea party.
If your little women enjoy everything girly, deck out the cubby house for an intimate tea party with their friends. You can bring in small chairs and a table and use the little girls’ tea set for the event.
But, do not let it be just pretend play. Serve cookies and other sweet treats and encourage the little kids to dress up in fancy frocks as if they’re from noble households. Also, remind them of proper tea etiquette to observe and get a huge kick out of them behaving like little “ladies.”
2. Turn the cubby house into a reading fort.
Assign the cubby house as the perfect place to read for your little learners. Place cushions and blankets in the cubby and fill it with different books for your children to read.
On a lazy day, tuck yourselves into the cubby for a cosy reading session. Do not forget to bring a few snacks because reading is more enjoyable for children when it is combined with some munching.
Borrow picture books from the local library or go shopping at the local bookstore for titles that the little ones are interested in. Make their summer vacation the season for fun learning.
3. Bring the cubby house to the kerb and sell lemonade.
Introduce your children to the world of business at a young age and help them run a lemonade stand in your neighbourhood while they are on a break from school. This simple business venture will be particularly successful if you live near the beach because most people will surely appreciate a refreshing glass of cold lemonade on a scorching day.
Keep the bubs cool, though, because the temperature can rise towards noon. Equip the cubby house with a fan or an air cooler for proper ventilation.
4. Stage some fun plays.
Pretend play is good for children’s development, and if yours have a blast acting out scenes from their favourite TV shows or the books they have read, encourage their artistic expression further by staging a play. You can use the cubby house as a prop or the actual stage for the play.
If you have other play sets and accessories, you’ll be able to make a more realistic set for the “mini theatre” production. Binoculars, rope ladders, cargo nets, and climbing rock packs make great props for the production.
You can schedule the performance for Christmas when family members and friends gather to celebrate the holiday. This will make the play an even bigger deal for your children. Who knows? You might just have an actor or actress in the making that you can sign up with a talent agency someday.
5. Start a kids’ club and make the cubby house its official headquarters.
Remember the “He Man Woman Haters Club” in the American movie “Little Rascals”? The kids had loads of fun being a member of that club, and you can provide your children with a similar experience.
Identify your children’s interests and encourage them to start a club based on their interests. Suggest activities such as game days, fundraisers, movie marathons, arts and crafts, and so much more.
The kids may just end up hanging out and doing nothing particularly productive, but it’s always nice to be able to gather them in one place where you can keep an eye on them.
A cubby house is truly a great piece of play equipment for children. This summer, you can make sure your little ones can use it in different creative ways to stay entertained.
