Book Nook: All the Women in My Family Sing

This year brought conversations about gender and racial inequality to the forefront. From the recent Kavanaugh hearings to the numerous cases of racial discrimination, the time is up for injustice! Women of all ages, races, and sexual orientations need to see their human rights respected and this starts by having compassion for those whose paths we have not walked. All the Women in My Family Sing helps build bridges of understanding that our culture so desperately needs right now. The anthology is a collection of prose and poetry by 69 diverse women (African American, Native American, Asian American, Muslim, Cameroonian, Kenyan, Liberian, Mexican American, Korean, Chinese American and LGBTQI) from ages 16 to 77.

I had a chance to interview publisher Christine Bronstein to learn more.

Why did you decide to write this book?
Our publishing company, Nothing But the Truth, LLC set an intention to reveal the racial inequities in the publishing world and create a book completely written, designed, edited and marketed by women of color.  We wanted to share stories of unique individuals who are not often given opportunities in the mainstream world of publishing.

Why is it so important to hear voices from people who are different than ourselves?
We live in a society that promotes the idea of difference. As i wrote in my foreword, “DNA, the hereditary material in all humans and organisms, is made of more than three million chemical bases. More than 99 per cent of these bases are the same in all people.” (U.S. National Library of Medicine, https://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/primer/basics/dna). Every person is a miraculous creation with power to love, grow and have compassion for all of humanity.

How can people use this book to inspire great things in their own lives?
Each essay opens readers to someone’s precious life experience that can inspire change, a belief in infinite possibilities,  show one how to be courageous and even make you laugh!
