Book Nook: Motivated for Greatness

Considering how it benefits the human condition, you’d think someone would have figured out by now how to bottle motivation. After all, it’s the adrenaline rush in the bloodstream — the fire in the belly — that helps us achieve the goals that make us individuals. But like any fuel, it can run low, especially if we’re constantly chasing goals that seem just out of arm’s reach.

In Motivated for Greatness: 100 Strategies to Keep You Inspired, author Byron V. Garrett recognizes the problem and offers up 100 strategies for refilling the motivation tank. Garrett knows of what he speaks. An accomplished business executive, government official and humanitarian, he has also authored There's Greatness on the Inside and recently launched the “Greatness Community,” a members-only platform for ideas, strategies, tools and resources to help people “live greatly.”

Garrett, who some may be tempted to call a Renaissance Man, seems to live the ideas he expounds upon in his books and speaking engagements. He is chairman of the National Family Engagement Alliance, which is geared toward equipping families with the tools to improve student achievement. He's also the visionary and chief creative officer of the Valdecio Collection, a lifestyle luxury brand of clothing, watches, fragrances and eyewear; former director of educational leadership and policy for Microsoft; and consulting officer for Scholastic, which in 2017 launched the Byron V. Garrett Social Emotional Learning Connection. Inspired by his bestselling book The ABC's of Life (Scholastic 2013), the company established a library dedicated to equipping young people with the skills needed to navigate life, making it a powerful resource for today's classrooms.
