Healthy Habits: BouncyBands

BouncyBands help students focus significantly more when using them at their desks in class. A Clemson University study has proven that while using patented BouncyBands, the average child is able to focus significantly more, which equates to 35 minutes each school day and countless more hours at home. Improved focus, better behavior, higher scores - the answer to every parent, educator, and child’s dreams.
BouncyBands are the #1 Teacher-Approved toys for student success. These fun, innovative, economical bands enable kids to release excess energy to stay on task and improve their test scores, while seated at their desks. With BouncyBands, children are happier and less restless while studying, which leads to improved test scores and greater self-esteem.

They are welcome in classrooms across the country and in fact, there have been more than 10,000 BouncyBands projects funded with DonorsChoose, How do they work? While actively stretching BouncyBands, attached to a desk or chair, students become calm and more focused, alleviating feelings of being extra-stimulated, overanxious, or frustrated. Similarly when students are bored, tired, or disinterested BouncyBands engage nerve endings on the bottom of their feet to generate ideas and encourage creativity.

BouncyBands were created by Scott Ertl, an elementary school counselor who wanted to help students at his school to stay focused and give them a way to stretch their legs and move instead of them dangling for the five or six hours they are at their desks each day.

I had a chance to interview Scott to learn more.

How does movement help kids?
Movement helps kids release extra energy, anxiety, and frustrations in an appropriate way when it doesn't distract others from learning. Most people don’t like to sit still for long periods of time, especially kids. The science behind BouncyBands is the Yerkes-Dodson Law where people perform at their best when they have medium energy levels. When students are overly stimulated by being anxious, hyperactive, or frustrated, they can bounce the band to keep them calm. And similarly, when students are under stimulated and feeling bored, tired or uninterested, bouncing on the band can engage nerve endings on the bottoms of the feet to generate ideas and improve performance to get them back on track. What role do BouncyBands play in education?
Students use Bouncy Bands in school to help them stay focused, relaxed and engaged so they can learn to the best of their ability instead of tuning out or acting up in class. And, teachers love how Bouncy Bands are easy to install, made from heavy-duty industrial strength rubber (that’s latex free, and made in America) that can withstand extensive use from energetic kids without distracting others.

If teachers are hesitant, how can parents approach their use in the classroom?
The best way is for parents to request a 1-week trial period for your child to use the Bouncy Band in class. Be sure that the child knows that the Bouncy Band is supposed to be used quietly and that the teacher can remove it at any time if it becomes a distraction. Besides young students, are there other people who might benefit from BouncyBands?
Yes, many adults use Bouncy Bands on their chairs at work and home to help increase blood circulation--especially when they have diabetes, deep vein thrombosis, restless leg syndrome, and ADHD. Also, dentists and doctors use Bouncy Bands in their waiting room chairs for patients to calm their anxieties before their appointments.
