- Use a trusted retailer when shopping online
Look for web addresses that begin with “https” and display the “lock” icon in your browser window; if it looks fishy, don’t give them your financial information
- Use a virtual credit card number: Virtual credit card numbers protect your real account information and can be set to only allow purchases with specific retailers
- Use credit cards with return protection:
To get your money back if the merchant refuses a return on a defective product
- Use a credit card with fraud protection: Cards with $0 Fraud Liability won’t make you pay for unauthorized purchases; check your cardholder agreement to see your liability
- Check for unauthorized transactions These can be signs of card fraud. Notify your card issuer immediately if this happens to minimize the damage
