I had a chance to see a digital copy of The New Color Mixing Companion by Minnesota-based artist and Instagramstar Josie Lewis. This book gave me a lot of ideas for when my daughter wants to make art but isn't quite sure where to start.
The projects in this book are great for playing with color, without having the commitment of doing a major art project. However, they turn out to make some pretty awesome-looking creations. One of my favorite features of this book is the way that it's so easy to find an overview of the project. The pictures are clear, there's a good time estimate of how long the project will take, and there's a mess level (either minimal, or some cute saying like "picking tiny hexes out of carpet is not my favorite"). It also highlights the skills learned (or strengthened) and the appropriate skill level for the project.
I really enjoyed this book. It's a good tool for any artist, no matter the medium - several types of media are used throughout the book, including paints and mosaics, which can help increase creativity and experimentation, even for those who have a preferred medium.
The New Color Mixing Companion is available now from Quarry Books.
