I recently had a chance to review The Storyteller's Illustrated Dictionary, a great, kid-friendly dictionary designed for kids aged seven to thirteen. The book has thousands of words organized into themes (character, setting, action, and more). The illustrations are engaging and reinforce the meaning of words.
What I really liked about this dictionary is how easy it is for kids to use. It's a great way for them to find new words to use in their writing - for English teachers or parents who are tired of seeing the same words over and over, this gives them a tool to encourage variety in writing. It's a tool kids can easily use, and a tool that can help inspire kids when they're stuck for ideas.
Mrs Wordsmith, launched in 2016 at founder Sofia Fenichell’s kitchen table, has become one of the world’s fastest growing edtech startups. Based on world-class machine learning talent and an advisor from Cambridge University, the company is trying to move away from a world where learning is largely editorialized and not research driven. Vocabulary is the biggest indicator of academic potential, the company has set out to increase vocabulary in children around the globe…and they have succeeded in spades! The National Literacy Trust recorded a 50% improvement in vocabulary when children were learning using Mrs. Wordsmith’s products.
