Many of us can relate to the painful time during our adolescence years when we wore braces to straighten our teeth. From getting foods stuck in the metal, to the aching experience of seeing the orthodontist each month to getting them tightened (not to mention the embarrassment of having a "metal mouth") – is it safe to assume that no kid enjoyed having braces?
Luckily, as we got older, technology has advanced – and now Invisalign is available for children as young as 7! Forget the embarrassing school photos and trying to hide your smile for Instagram pictures, kids can now receive the same benefits for their teeth without metal in their mouths. However, it's important for parents to hear from an expert before deciding that Invisalign is better for their child.
I had a chance to interview Dr/. Oleg Drut, Clinical Director at Diamond Braces, the #1 provider of Invisalign in North America with offices across the tri-state area.
What are the advantages of Invisalign?Invisalign offers number of advantages over traditional fixed appliances (braces)
- Less discomfort
- Less disruption to ones life style (no food restrictions and better brushing since patient
- Better home care
- Less so called emergency visits
- Less frequent doctors visit during treatment time since the movements are pre programmed by the treating doctor and patient has to change aligners at home
What are some situations where it might not be appropriate?
In certain cases, where tooth movement is complex, we use combination of fixed appliances and invisalign to help to expedite the tooth movement. There is no case that invisalign or combination of invisalign or fixed appliances could not be used to treat the case all based on the doctor's expertise and experience. That is why it is important for a patient to choose an experienced invisalign provider.
When is the best time to make a decision regarding orthodontic treatment?
There is never too late to start orthodontic treatment as long as teeth and gums are healthy. We start as early as 7 years and and have patients in their 70s as well. It is best to consult an orthodontist. Many offer a complementary consultation to their clients
Any other information we should know?
It is important to keep mouth healthy to help to prevent heart disease. Some research suggests poor home care, inflamed gums, periodontal disease could cause diabetes, low birth weight, clogged arteries, premature birth and other systemic health issue. That is why good health teeth and functionally sound bite are important not just for aesthetic reason but primarily for overall health.
