InsureMyTrip is reporting an increase in calls from concerned travelers over Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft.
Here's what travel insurance agents are telling policyholders:
1. There is no coverage for fear of flying on one of these planes; if a customer’s flight is still traveling as scheduled but they are afraid of flying, coverage does not apply unless they have a special benefit called "Cancel For Any Reason" or CFAR.
2. Travel insurance policyholders may have coverage if their flight is delayed, canceled, or grounded due to this event. Trip Delay and Missed Connections benefits may apply for customers affected while in travel status if they have the “Common Carrier Delay” or “Common Carrier caused delay” peril on each benefit.
3. Some plans have a Trip Cancellation or Travel Interruption peril which states “mechanical/equipment failure of a Common Carrier that occurs on a scheduled Trip and causes complete cessation of the Insured’s travel and results in a Loss of 50% of the Insured’s Trip length”. If a customer’s flights are cancelled due to these groundings, and they are not able to be re-accommodated in time to make at least half their trip, then coverage for Cancellation or Interruption would apply.
