Healthy Habits: Preparing for a Fertility Specialist Appointment

So you’ve made the decision to see a fertility specialist. Now what?

The path to pregnancy is overwhelming to say the least. Available to explain what you need to know for your first fertility doctor appointment is Dr. Zaher Merhi.

Dr. Merhi recently spoke with The Cut about how to prepare, and what to expect, when it comes to this appointment. Dr. Merhi is the Director of Research and Development in IVF Technologies at New Hope Fertility Center, one of the leading fertility clinics in Manhattan.

Below, Dr. Merhi breaks down everything that first-time patients need to know:
Before the Appointment:
  • It’s stressful enough just making the appointment, but come prepared to discuss your and if you have one, your partner’s, medical history, fertility struggle and more
Once There:
  • A lot of paperwork is involved, including insurance, consent signatures, and overall health and pregnancy history
The Doctor’s Role:
  • The doctor’s job is to do a lot of explaining, even the basics
  • Dr. Merhi shares with patients how babies are made through intercourse and how they’re made through IUI, or intrauterine insemination
During the Appointment:
  • A transvaginal ultrasound will take place, where the doctor will observe the patient’s uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and general pelvic exam, as well as many follicles the patient has
  • Blood will be drawn for hormone tests as well as STD screenings and genetic screening tests
Before You Go:
  • Dr. Merhi always likes for his patients to have a plan in place in their head before they leave, and then calls the patient the next day, as many questions will likely come up
