Fun Freetime: Molly of Denali

Today a brand-new children’s series, Molly of Denali, premieres on PBS KIDS (check local listings). This groundbreaking animated show for kids 4 through 8 is the first-ever national children’s series to feature Native American leads.

In each adventure-filled episode, young viewers join Molly, her dog Suki, and her friends Tooey and Trini on their daily, nature-fueled outings in Alaska – from dogsledding and ice-fishing to volcano-watching, moose-calling and more! Whenever something exciting happens in her (fictional) hometown of Qyah, Molly shares all about it on her vlog, giving kids all across the U.S. an up-close look at her life in Alaska.

In addition to highlighting strong female role models, Molly of Denali emphasizes Alaska Native values such as respecting others, sharing what you have, honoring your elders, and prioritizing family and intergenerational relationships. With an innovative curriculum steeped in Informational Text – an important aspect of literacy education – the series also shows how technology aids communication. In every episode, Molly navigates her world and solves problems with the help of books, online resources, field guides, historical documents, maps, tables, posters, photos, Indigenous knowledge from elders, her very own vlog, and beyond.
