Mira Lehr: A Walk in the Garden
Upcoming Solo Show for Art Basel Miami Beach
-- October 15 - Feb. 3 --
As a young child growing up in Miami Beach in the 1940s, on her way to school each morning Mira Lehr remembers walking by a terrible sign that read: "No Jews, No Dogs" (this was during her childhood years from 1947-1949).
Now, 70+ years later, this powerful story comes full circle because the buildings housing the museum were originally built as the first synagogue on Miami Beach for Jewish residents, who, having been discouraged from living north of fifth street, were living in this South Beach neighborhood. Her new show opens Oct. 15 through Feb. 3 at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU.
For this new show, at the age of 85, Lehr will debut new monumental paintings that have never been shown, plus a large-scale installation of 200+ new aerial sculptures that will hang from the ceiling.
