Book Nook: The Ordinary Reindeer

Fran Rathmann is an accomplished author who uses her stories to shows kids that although they may be ordinary, they can do extraordinary things. This inspiring message is wonderfully illustrated in her new children’s book, “The Ordinary Reindeer and Santa’s Gift.”

In this third and final book of “The Ordinary Reindeer” series, the Ordinary Reindeer tells readers about his difficult past and his dreams for the future. He aspires to lead the other reindeer on Santa’s sleigh and waits with his girlfriend, Tessie, to see who Santa will end up choosing this Christmas. Never giving up on his goal, the Ordinary Reindeer eventually receives a very special Christmas gift from Santa.

Rathmann presents an uplifting story that can be enjoyed by readers of all ages and is the perfect Christmas story. Its charming visuals and heartwarming messages will add to the holiday spirit for all.

Why did you decide to write this series?
I wrote this series to show children that it is easy to dream but it takes hard work to achieve that dream. In spite of some challenges, the ordinary reindeer accomplished extraordinary things.
What makes a good Christmas story for kids?
A Christmas story should be exciting, glittery, and magical.  Kids must see themselves in the characters of the story.  All Christmas stories should have a real and happy ending.
What's your favorite thing about writing children's books?
I can be a child again.  I can relive all the challenges and triumphs of my childhood. I can pass on my successes to the kids.  I like to see the children identify with the ordinary reindeer and voice what the book means to them.
